The original covers were unremarkable, flat and lacked a strong emotional effect. There was no existing cover art and contact with the original creator was restricted by the licensor. Anything that was used for making the cover would come from the source material. We also wished to reach readers of books like Ghost World, DEMO and Love and Rockets.
These graphic novels are a two-volume collection of short stories revolving around the lives of people in a small neighborhood in Tokyo, each striving in some way to cope with reality’s joy and sadness. This duality is represented by upbeat imagery for volume one and melancholy images for the volume two. A crow reoccurs as a symbol of hope, change and death throughout the series. Typography overlays an image of a suburban neighborhood that is ordinary but precious.
