The past VIZ Media product catalogs were rather flat. Each title was displayed the same and though presented in color, they did not showcase the uniqueness of each title. This made it difficult for buyers and retailers to pick and chose the books that they were interested in. The marketing and sales department wished to revamp the catalog into something that would be engaging, combining elements of a “magazine style” storytelling to make a stronger impact on vendors and retailers
I acted as support for the lead designer, providing feedback when needed during the brainstorming and conception stages. I developed interstitial spreads which were a device to separate the offerings by season of release. These spreads were unique interpretations of the manga, relying on a single bright color overlaying white or black to make an instant “pop.” I also designed the page layout for the table of contents. One of the interstitial concepts served as inspiration for the catalog cover.
